Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper

Nicoya Península Waterkeeper is a Costa Rican non-profit organization and a member of a global network of more than 350 Waterkeeper organizations dedicated to cleaning up rivers, lakes and coastlines through grassroots action. The organization’s mission is to monitor, protect and restore water quality in the coastal watershed and marine ecosystem between Nicoya’s Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve and the Caletas-Ario National Wildlife Refuge through research, field work, education and advocacy.

The organization works on four interconnected pillars: wastewater management, solid waste management, education and awareness raising, and law enforcement

They monitor river water quality on a monthly basis, provide wastewater management advice, lead the Blue Flag Awards on beaches, and are part of the Wastewater working group together with the Municipality and the Ministry of Health aiming at addressing pollution cases more efficiently.

Their Ocean Friendly Business is a project that supports businesses through their transformation process towards implementing sustainable practices that contribute to ocean health. Some of these practices involve recycling, composting, proper waste water treatment and not buying or selling single-use plastics.

In alliance with Bionic, a material engineering company, Nicoya Península Waterkeeper built a Recycling Center in the town of Cobano and runs weekly collection routes that collect all the recyclables from town. They also do weekly beach and public space cleanups and conduct trainings on recycling, composting and waste water while  encouraging environmental awareness through events and cleanups.

It takes everybody getting involved to reverse the damage that has occurred to our planet’s ecosystem. TwoCan Retreats is proud to support Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper.
